AnalysisGeneva has some of the highest health insurance premiums in Switzerland. For many households, the subsidy is not a bonus: it is what keeps the premium affordable. Here is a breakdown.
Basic health insurance (LAMal) is compulsory for everyone resident in Switzerland. In Geneva, premiums are structurally high, which makes cantonal support all the more important for low and middle incomes.
The subsidy is financial support paid by the canton to reduce your LAMal premium. It is neither a loan nor an advance: it does not have to be repaid. In practice, if granted, it is paid directly to your insurer and deducted from your premium: you pay less each month, with no advance on your part.
Three main conditions: be resident in the canton of Geneva, be affiliated with LAMal, and have an RDU below the thresholds. Swiss nationality is not required: holders of a C, B, L, N or F permit can also be entitled. See our eligibility and entitlement page.
For a couple with two children whose RDU is CHF 75,000, the combined subsidy can reach CHF 744 per month, nearly CHF 9,000 over the year. Enough to seriously change a family budget.
